My niece came to Houston this weekend to tour the Rice University campus.  She is one of the few people in the world who actually has an opportunity to attend an Ivy League school; she’s incredibly smart, works hard, and her parents have been saving up forever.  It was making my head dizzy hearing about all of her choices between Cambridge, Columbia, Standford, etc.  She’s also just a junior and 16… and 5 foot 11 inches, which actually has not a whole lot to do with her massive intelligence and drive, but is the reason she is crouched down.

(Before lunch at a somewhat busy restaurant…)

Me:  Are you ready to have your picture taken?  We should do it before you eat.

Sister-In-Law:  Are you going to do it here?  (Looking around the table.)

Me:  No, I’m going to take her out back somewhere.

(A puzzled look came across my nieces face.)

Niece:  We are going to do it here?!!  By the garbage?

Me:  Yes.

(A short old Mexican busboy[man] walks by with a bucket of dirty dishes in his hands.)

(My Niece)

So there you go… my beautiful niece… by the garbage… which you’d only know that she was by that because I told you… which I am only telling you because I thought it was funny.  It’s been a long while since I used to get embarrassed about shooting in odd places or asking people to do awkward poses.  For me, it’s all about getting the picture.  (Not so bad seeing how I got this in 3 clicks, in the back of a Mexican restaurant, shooting someone who didn’t even expect I was going to photograph her that morning because she was focusing on other things like her AP Chemistry and US History class and visiting Rice University.  I am looking forward to next summer when I can photograph her properly for her senior pictures… I may have to borrow a ladder.)
